The economy was the best it's ever been in the history of our country and now everything is going to shit because of less than 100 deaths. More people probably die each year from skiing accidents. My Publix was out of eggs, DHA milk, and toilet paper... you know what there were a ton of? Canned foods and baby wipes. This is a lot of reactionary panic, I agree.

There was nothing at the 3 Publix by my place. Nothing in Walmart, Aldi, convenience stores, etc. All the meats were gone (was going to make beef jerkey since it will last a good while...and haven't made some in a long while).
Wiped out here locally, too. No eggs, milk, cereal, laundry soap,tp, all lunch meats, cheese and breads are gone. I need to go to work, and brown bag my lunches. No access to a microwave during the day. Going to have to get creative and think out side the box a little.

that's weird, here in NC just came from aldi, and it had 2 pallets of paper towels, lots of diapers, plenty of milk/eggs. the meat was a little slim pickings, but there was plenty for me, they had tons of deli meats, cases of it. there was very little they were out of stock. my grocery store had stuff when I went by there too.
The only thing I really can't find is hand-sanitizer and clorox type products like wipes and baby wipes.
Similar here in Charlotte, Lidl and Aldi's, milk, paper towels but no TP. Plenty on canned goods, chicken, fruit, cheese, but no rice. Local Harris Teeter picked clean of milk, cheese, rice, fruit, bread. They just closed public schools here, probably had something to do with the run on food.

No issues here, we still have had ZERO identified cases of Corona in the entire region. Every store I have been to has overstocked in anticipation of a run that hasn't occurred as of yet and I'm doubting will happen. On a good note, my commute to work in the city has become heavenly, nearly no government workers going to work these days, they get paid to sleep and stay home now.

The models that are used to calculate the death rate account for unreported cases. Their assumptions for how many unreported cases there are may not be entirely accurate, but I tend to err on the side of believing until there’s evidence that the models are wrong.

Public health agencies already have the power to forcibly quarantine someone with a contagious disease, especially one with no effective treatment. They do it for tuberculosis, and people have been arrested for defying it.
My county in Texas has imposed a home quarantine on about two dozen people, because they were either in a country with a COVID-19 epidemic, or were known to be in close contact with someone who tested positive. So far, all have either completed the 14-day quarantine without symptoms, tested negative after becoming symptomatic, or are still in quarantine. There have been no confirmed cases so far, and we are on the periphery of a major metro area.
The OP's point is that if the current measures (which are inconvenient, but not a "lockdown") don't work because people don't take them seriously, more restrictive measures will be implemented. What they will be or how they will be enforced is an open question.
Italy ignored the problem until it got out of control, and have had to resort to draconian measures. You can't leave your home except for necessities like food, medicine, etc. Spain, Lithuania, France, Poland and Norway have implemented similar measures, but not as restrictive.

No, this is not less lethal than the flu. It is the flu. The reason coronavirus is more lethal than the common flu is what happens afterward. The SARS line of viruses are extremely good at attacking your immune cells inside your respiratory tract. So the flu itself is not what kills you. It's your body's natural ability to fight off bateria that the virus is killing. That is what pneumonia is caused by - bacteria - and it's very hard to come back once you have severe pneumonia. Also the elderly are much less likely to fight it off. So "just the flu" is a very misleading and dangerous statement to make about SARS line of viruses. The reason coronaavirus is SARS ON CRACK is because it can spread like wildfire before any symptoms arise. Thus every person can theoretically be infecting 100 other people before they even have a single symptom. This is called exponential growth and if you know anything about exponents, it means if we don't stop it now eventually everyone will catch it within a few months.

I think that's the point of this freakout - it's too late to stop it. There's a diseases that can incubate for two weeks without symptoms and then suddenly onset to cause so real damage? Yeah - good luck containing that.

I think the point though is that its only potentially fatal to a very small percentage of people - there is no vaccone or cure, and the virus is already here. Shutting everything down to the point people are losing their 401ks is asinine when all we're doing is prolonging the inevitable, that without a vax everyone is eventually going to get it. 10x is the low estimate - it is being realized in countries that were able to contain their outbreaks below the capacity of their hospitals. In countries where the hospitals are overwhelmed, the fatality rate is averaging around 30x more lethal than the flu.
The rough breakdown is 80% mild symptoms - rest and recover at home. 15% severe symptoms - need hospitalization. 5% critical symptoms - need ICU care.
Of the critical cases that require an ICU, about 1 in 5 die no matter what. The prognosis for the other 4 depends on the availability of ICU care. If there are enough ventilators, enough monitors, enough doctors, enough nurses - most of them will recover. If there are not enough, most of them will die.

Every country is shutting down. Not only the US. The problem, as experienced in Italy, is that there aren't enough intensive care beds and ventilators to keep every patient alive. This is a curable disease, WHEN you have enough resources. Imagine a hospital can take care of ten people per day and get them back to good health. Now imagine that same hospital has to deal with 100 patients per day. In Italy they literally decide not to ventilate (AND SAVE!) people over 60 who are in bad shape because there's not enough ventilators. This is in Lombardia, one of the richest and most prosperous areas of Italy and Europe, not exactly a shithole.
Perhaps a more sensible approach would be to quarantine the elderly and let everyone else gain group immunity by eventually contracting the disease. At least they wouldn't completely fuck up the global economy.

I started looking at the crosstabs of people who actually show up to the hospital and get diagnosed with the flu next to actual confirmed flu deaths. In the rare instance that they do get the flu virus right that year, if you got the vaccine at the beginning of the season, you'd be susceptible by the end of the season. That's why, at most, they boast a 60% efficacy. I believe one year it was only 19%. The US government pours literally billions into the companies that make that vaccine.

We have the actual death rates per infected. It is quite deadly. Not as deadly as MERS or SARS and definitely not a death sentence like ebola ... but it is quite a bit more deadly than the common flu. 0.01% for the flu vs 3% observed for covid 19 (probably will end up closer 0.1 to 1% after the number of mild positive cases go up).
But we truly don’t know this, as we do not have an accurate number of those infected. Many have the virus, aren’t tested, and just have mild symptoms (like a cold). So we really aren’t sure how deadly it is by percentage of COVID-19 cases vs deaths.
That's right. We don't know the number of mild cases. I'm assuming there are 10 mild cases for every diagnosed case. That's why I think the actual rate of death is closer to <1% rather than the published 3%. If there are 100-1000 undiagnosed mild cases for every diagnosed case, then it would be equally as deadly as the flu.
edit: We do have the data set from a closed system, the Diamond Princess. Currently 7 deaths out of 696 with 233 still active cases. So the low range of the death rate is around 1%. If more of the 233 active cases die, the death rate will go up. As it's been a couple of weeks since infection, I'm suspecting all of the 233 active cases will survive.
However, that cruise ship is a very different environment. It is close quarters and contained. So I predict the death rate will be much lower as a percentage.

My town was packed yesterday for this time of year. It was a ghost town 3 weeks ago. People are retarded. Grocery stores are full every day. Everyone's packing into stores to ummm... avoid others? Shit is ridiculous and backwards.
