This whole thing stinks to high heaven. At most so far 59 people have died, with most of them being in one nursing home in Kirkland WA. The media is fear mongering harder than ever to make orange man look bad. Schools and businesses are closing which is sure to send us into recession if not worse. Out of 330,000,000 people, 59 have died in the US and everything is screeching to a halt. Something isn't right here but it's fucking everything up. The economy was the best it's ever been in the history of our country and now everything is going to shit because of less than 100 deaths. More people probably die each year from skiing accidents. This is un fucking believable.
EDIT: I'm not saying this is a total hoax. I'm saying the media overreaction is making things way worse than they have to be. Panicking is never going to make anything better. If this is truly as bad as some of you are saying, I hope it justifies sending our economy into great depression 2 Corona boogaloo
Hogwash. Just fucking hogwash. There would be millions and millions dead already in Asia if this were true.
We have the actual death rates per infected. It is quite deadly. Not as deadly as MERS or SARS and definitely not a death sentence like ebola ... but it is quite a bit more deadly than the common flu. 0.01% for the flu vs 3% observed for covid 19 (probably will end up closer 0.1 to 1% after the number of mild positive cases go up).
But we truly don’t know this, as we do not have an accurate number of those infected. Many have the virus, aren’t tested, and just have mild symptoms (like a cold). So we really aren’t sure how deadly it is by percentage of COVID-19 cases vs deaths.
That's right. We don't know the number of mild cases. I'm assuming there are 10 mild cases for every diagnosed case. That's why I think the actual rate of death is closer to <1% rather than the published 3%. If there are 100-1000 undiagnosed mild cases for every diagnosed case, then it would be equally as deadly as the flu.
edit: We do have the data set from a closed system, the Diamond Princess. Currently 7 deaths out of 696 with 233 still active cases. So the low range of the death rate is around 1%. If more of the 233 active cases die, the death rate will go up. As it's been a couple of weeks since infection, I'm suspecting all of the 233 active cases will survive.
However, that cruise ship is a very different environment. It is close quarters and contained. So I predict the death rate will be much lower as a percentage.
Because China sees its people like cattle, and it's easier to just kill people than provide them the basic necessities of life, like clean food and water.
Good to know this place has already been inundated with concern trolls.
Just because someone is worried doesn't make them a "concern troll".
A concern troll says "Trump is great, but his failure at providing testing kits could kill us all."
Yes, that is exactly what a concern troll is. You drum up concern without fact to back it. You see what is obviously intentionally skewed data with about a thousand different confounding variables and take the opinion of the analyzer as fact. This is what we criticize the left for doing, but because you don't think critically about what you read, you do the exact same thing.
So should I have called you a "nervous twat" instead?
Obviously you've never looked at death rates for ebola, mers and the 2003 strain of sars.
Playing with numbers and trusting the info out there is useless.
We should be having real data on the ground by now, especially there should have been a massive spread from the cluster in the state of Washington.
No, it's not the worst of the worst. It is just novel, and we need to buy time.
Not to be rude, but you are part of the problem.
You have no idea what a "worst of the worst" pathogen is and pray you never do. A "worst of the worst" pathogen would entail complete inability of the human immune system being able to combat a new pathogen.
80%+ of people who get COVID-19 will either 1) Recover without even knowing they had the virus, or 2) Only experience mild/moderate symptoms comparable to a common cold.
And you keep bringing up R0 values, but your not considering everything about the virus within context. Its not R0 value high = auto death mode. There have been other pathogens throughout human history with similar or higher R0 values that didn't wipe out human existence. Simply citing the level of contagiousness is not enough. For example, a bad flu strain has an R0 value of 3+ and accounts for as high as 15% of all flu-related deaths in the 65 yrs of age+ older population. And the CDC currently believes its actually much higher than that percentage.
China is a filthy communist country that was stealing our secrets with the help of Hillary and the anti christ Obama!
