Sickle cell anemia was selected for through evolution because sickle cells only live for about 18 days instead of 60 like normal red blood cells. Malaria has a 30 day incubation period. If you have sickle cell it can’t kill you. Or at least greatly reduces the chance it could kill you. Then your kids get sickle cell and also can’t die from malaria. Life finds a way.
