I think the reason why the overall cases is only at 150k and not way higher is because the countries who came first have all gone into quarantine. The other countries are still at the initial stages of the exponential growth. If the number of cases continues to increase as it has in the last week here in the US, which is 30% per day, it will be 200,000 here in 2 weeks time if I'm correct. (5637 total case so far*(1.3)^14). Hopefully with Trumps announcement it wont spread as fast.
That being said I dont fully know why we are reacting so much to this compared to the swine flu as as you said it infected 8 million Americans. Maybe it is because this is SARS-2 and not influenza which the swine flu was, and SARS is more deadly?
