Would be great to get back to a time when "crime" was a shock instead of a norm.

If only we could pinpoint a group that was committing a staggeringly dis-proportionality of those crimes......

There's a reason why the idiom "When seconds count, police are only minutes away" is so well-known.

Everyone inherently KNOWS that police can't be everywhere at all times to prevent crime. At the best of times, you might get lucky and be helped by a nearby police officer shortly after the crime starts. However, in most circumstances, they're only there AFTER THE FACT, and they may not even be able to solve the crime or bring anyone to justice for it.

You can only count on yourself to protect you and yours in an emergency, and the more America starts accepting that fact, the more we can return to a general sense of peace (as the violent ones get locked up in jail, the crazy ones get placed in mental wards, and both get treated the best we can to potentially help them escape the criminal cycle by rejoining society as a stable friendly citizen).
