You are perfectly valid in saying this. There is nothing wrong with it, and those of us getting annoyed with the concern trolls did not care one bit the first time it was done. Or the second. But when it was a constant stream over and over again by the same people, and then switching topics to something else the next day with the same level of fake hysteria, it is no longer a valid concern but a game being played.

Being concerned or scared is a perfectly normal emotion. There are a lot of unknowns right now. we feel like we're not in control. Hence the panic buying, hording, paper-thin patience with others, ect. In our modern and tidy society, we are at out least concern when we fell like we're in control. However, we have to have a little perspective, this is all temporary, nothing about our current situation is in any way permanent. These exact scenarios have happened in the past, and will happen again in the future. We cannot let our emotion overrun our ability to think rationally and logically.

I don't consider myself a hoarder, but my family has on hand at all times about 3 months worth of food. We are well water and have a generator if needed for that. I haven't bought a single "extra" thing the past few weeks becasue we already have enough for a couple-three months at least. These are supplies we've built up over time and maintain.

My hope is that this trial run of a "real" disaster will help people to decide to prepare more for next time around, as you have over time as well:)

You also have to understand that men react differently than women (I’m a female Trump supporter too, but the majority of TDers are men) We worry, especially when we have young kids- they run towards danger with a rebel yell - and thank God for that.

Great point. Disagreements often lead to education, which is always a positive thing.

I am very concerned and perplexed about the government over reaction on this. But the more I think about the money I see it as GEOTUS’s only play. It is essentially buying the moderate vote for November. As dirty and non-conservative as that sounds, it may be absolutely necessary to win. Buying votes is how Democrats have always won elections. If GEOTUS has to do it temporarily and then bring down the hammer after he wins then so be it. In the scheme of things what’s another $2T when we are already $22T in debt?

It's not less deadly than the flu, though. It's looking like at least 1% mortality, possibly more. Also more contagious than the flu, which contributes to exponential growth and results in situations like Italy, with hospitals being overwhelmed because they are admitting people faster than they are discharging them.

WeinerLapTop 1 point ago +3 / -2

Italy is a dirtball country filled with old people and immigrants. They all hugged a chinaman. Their socialist system is failing because it sucks and the people arent capable. Not because of corona.

The only thing I would add about "be mean" is that it's not particularly helpful, and I myself try not to do it. I don't get butthurt if someone is rude to me; I just don't care. But on the chance they had something useful to say, I will likely miss it, which is unfortunate.

There are only a few posters who apparently believe that name calling is the right response to anyone/everyone who disagrees with them. "Shill," "panicbot," and "chinabot," get a lot of play also. If these people really believed their accusations, they'd report and let it go. But it looks like the name calling itself is what they enjoy. It detracts from the site.

Name calling a trump supporter -> "Deport" -> "Be respectful"

I don't tolerate that garbage here. No one else should.

1
Brer_Raptor 1 point ago +4 / -3

I think we have. I never used to get this downvoted on T_D, and I've been around for a long time. Even when I used to rarely have differing opinions, people were always respectful. Heck, people used to even welcome Leftists, so long as they were kind and open-minded. There are people here who are spewing outright hatred at anyone who does not 100% agree with their "it's just the flu, guys" narrative. I'm having people here tell me they despise me, just for a difference of opinion...

Based on an article I read a few days ago, we have about 95K ICU beds for critical care. But on any given day, 2/3rds of them are filled (on average). The influenza season causes utilization to go up.

Whatever happens with COVID-19, there will still be people getting critically ill from other diseases, or serious accidents, etc. These unfortunate people and COVID-19 cases will be competing for critical care resources.

We can handle 30K critically ill people.

It becomes much more difficult if there are 100K.

Your source, please? This is mine:

https://www.sccm.org/Blog/March-2020/United-States-Resource-Availability-for-COVID-19

They have 534,964 acute care beds, including 96,596 ICU beds.

The OP's entire point for his post was for you to calm down and stop attacking people.

Influenza is a particular type of virus. Coronaviruses are a different type. You can find articles on microbiology that explain the differences.

I think you might be thinking of the common cold. I think four different coronaviruses have mutated into a mostly benign form and are responsible for 15% to 25% (I've seen both numbers) of the common colds.

It has pretty much made me self deport from this site just as it really got going. You can go look up my profile on Reddit to see I have been a long time supporter and that I am not a concern troll. I have been saying a pandemic like this was bound to happen in our lifetime and now it has happened. The President I taking it very serious and I personally feel he made all of the right calls and was ahead of the curve.

What boggles my mind, is clearly Trump is taking this very serious. The guy is immune to fake news attacks, yet some of his supporters are dismissing something that he thinks is very much real.

Listen, we can argue the semantics of the mortality rate all day and I agree it is probably not as high as what is being reported. However, I think the rate that requires hospitalization is unsustainable and if we let this go unchecked the system will be overloaded and we will see the death rates similar to what is being reported

It is either take this serious and put measures in place so that we do not see the mortality rates that are being reported, or ignore the entire thing and become overwhelmed with people experiencing SARS symptoms and watch as the bodies start stacking up.

I am prouder than I have ever been to support Trump. He was called racist and xenophobic for stopping travel, yet it was the right call. He is taking extreme measures to ensure we stay below the curve and he is not allowing this to spiral out of control. If you get it and happen to be one of the unluckily ones that get hit hard and experience severe respiratory issues, I am almost certain you have a 99% chance of living as long as you can get care. However, once all of the beds are full that is when we are in trouble.

I think our only way out of this is using the American might to implement war time production levels to increase the US healthcare capacity by drastically increasing the supply of beds with mechanical ventilators.

Also, fuck China. We need to use this as Exhibit A on why our over reliance on them is an existential threat. Yet again, Trump was right all along.

Thank you for this comment; it's refreshing to see someone here who shares the same concerns I do. I'm very happy with how Trump is handling this; the travel bans for China and Europe no doubt bought us some serious time and saved some lives. I just hope that we can figure out the ventilator situation, because I really think we are going to end up with hospitals being overwhelmed...

Unfortunately, there are many people here that mistake the "downvote" button for "I don't like what you said" vs. "you are being an ass". I normally don't use the downvote except for the latter.

Thank you! I'm a 4th year medical student. I've seen what this does to a young person's lungs, let alone old and sick people. To ignore it is very dumb. But thanks to Trump and the incredible strength of our economy and health care innovation, we are going to get through it.

1
RiverFenix 1 point ago +5 / -4

I think the majority of the 'concern' trolling going on is people saying "Calm down about CV, you're going to crash the economy and it's all your fault"..

Concern trolling is a tactic used to keep people in check by making them second guess their own opinions/rationale. If someone is/wants to panic, that's fine for them. We can each be calm in our own right and have dialogue with the person.

Those who waltz in with a "You fucking morons" attitude, is concerned we're somehow not being Conservatives/Trump supporters in his image/standard.

Those people can blow a tranny on the way to work.

5

I'm a boomer, and I really don't care about the Boomer bullshit.

I chalk it up to youth, ignorance, and inexperience.

Most of them will realize it was stupid as they get older, and there's nothing we can do to hasten it along.

I honestly don't understand the level of hate I'm seeing here about all this. Look no further than this comment thread; follow it down and you'll see what I mean... I'm trying to have discussions here about what I think is a serious issue, and people are acting out with Leftist-levels of hatred. Idk if they're undercover Leftists trying to divide us or trying to make us look less welcoming than we always were towards people with other opinions, or if a lot of hateful people have just become Trump fans, or what. It's strange.
