I used to visit my grandparents farm when I was a kid in the 1950s. The only thing I can think about it since then about it is the fetid smell and taste of raw milk. To this day I get queasy at the sight of a container of buttermilk.
There's a difference between "raw milk" as an industry term and literally raw, straight from the animal milk. Long before homogenization and pasteurization were a thing, farmers would skim the cream off the top and knew to chill the milk and shake it before drinking.
Milk straight from the cow isn't very good or tasty. It's not intended for humans, after all.
Good gouge. I never really looked into it but only remember that sick smell with any mention of it. I have to trust and assume Grandma Puffitt knew enough to skim/chill/shake that cow milk and chalk it up to it's just that way.
