I really don't understand why we're watching the world economy go into freefall for social distancing when we could just quarantine those vulnerable to the disease. This only ends when every single person is immune to the disease, so wouldn't it make sense to quarantine those who could die from the disease and then let it run its course? It's incredibly frustrating.

Know what's even more frustrating, though? That's still an option.

I'm guessing because there's more to this than what we're being told. We might never know the real reason or will be told once all the fallout settles. There's a few working theories out there about what's really happening...

Yeah I think it's something where both sides are leveraging this for their fight. Good will prevail but how long will it be? We'll have to find that out as things grind along here since I don't think any of us are really important enough to really know...

That wouldn’t tank the economy

Plus they would avoid exposure themselves. Your solution makes the problem go away. Can't have that, have to tank the economy to stop Trump.

The scenario that is playing out has nothing to do with saving life. The process that is going on is mainly stop A LOT of people from getting sick at one time. If this occurs what you get is basically the same thing you have seen at grocery stores; empty shelves. Imagine if everyone got sick at once and converged on the medical field, for one we would quickly clean their shelves of medical supplies without the people available to restock but most importantly, we would seriously task the medical personnel themselves. Dont think of them as always being there, they will get sick too and be physically drained by this event. This whole process is to prevent if possible but at a minimum to spread this illness over weeks or months so it doesnt strain anyone or anything giving service or aid.

Humans don't seem to develop immunity to it, for one thing.

If you let the virus spread unchecked through the under 60 population the economy would grind to a halt anyway because so many people would be sick at once, and the healthcare system would be totally overwhelmed.

Younger people may not be at high risk for serious complications or death, but many of them would still be sick enough not to work.

Plus the fact, we still don't know nearly enough about what the virus actually does, what long term damage it might cause to the lungs, etc. Much better to gain more knowledge before letting the whole population get it.

I think the problem is that the vulnerable need to be fed. They need medication. They need to be washed. That requires younger people, with kids, to go in there and do it. And no one I've seen anywhere can reliably say exactly how to stop transmission.

I hate overreactions as much as you. I think they are trying to protect the healthcare system as best they can with the info they have.

My kids come home. They are unaffected carriers. They give to me. I go make sure my vulnerable oldster takes his 5pm dose. Now, oldster needs an ICU bed, and that seems to be a very limiting factor.

It is very frustrating.

Look at China, Italy, and Korea, and then tel me again why this isn't serious.

It will be a whole lot easier to tell who is sick, and who is not, in two weeks.

Herd immunity is good on paper. Corona virus isnt like chicken pox; you get the common cold often, maybe multiple times a year. If we let this run wild and infect 100 million folks even with a .5% death rate, we're looking at 500,000 dead folks. Also you run the risk of getting mutated versions of this virus when you let it fester in a healthy population. It may work for denmark or other small countries but they're relying on draining their neighbor countries of resources if it goes south. America has too many folks to do that reasonably. We've started this path of drastically reducing the spread, which seems to be working in China and we're also around the corner from warmer weather which will reduce transmission rates. Someone will come up with a vaccine and we'll kick this thing. It'll be a western country, if not America that develops it and I'm going to guess we'll manufacture the cure, not ship it to China. Now on that note, we think theres a crazy run on TP, wait till the cure is found but not released to the public. Things will be very nasty at that point and there will be huge finger pointing at every death. It will be like when the polio cure was released and the entire country rushed their doc.

We fucked ourselves with reliance on China, and Just In Time medical facilitation. The Quarantine is about catch-up on that, smoothing the curve, and I doubt its going to happen, same actors that lead us here are still to 100% profit oriented and will continue the same way. As far as quarantine, I think you are right, we have a <2% mortality rate. I think in certain cases lock down makes sense (think SARS but more contagious with 50% mortality rate)

We're still at the point where we don't really understand what this disease does, we don't understand how it is transmitted, and we don't really understand how to stop it or to treat it.

Very soon we'll have the capacity to test a very large number of people very accurately, so we can get a better picture of who actually has it and how it is actually transmitted.

We're also working on getting a clearer understanding of how the virus works and how to treat it and what kind of immunizations will protect against it.

We won't have all the answers for years, but we're getting more information as time goes on. Very shortly we'll know whether quarantine is warranted or not. Right now, we're just being super-cautious.

After all, there is the possibility that this is AIDS that spreads by a cough or a touch.

I honestly want to put myself on lockdown but I don't think I'll get the pto unless I'm having symptoms. Oh and I have asthma.
