The Federal Government only trumps the states in the areas where the Constitution says it does. We were supposed to have 50 independent nations that are unified in a very specific and limited way to ensure the survival of everyone.
The federal government tried taking over state governments during reconstruction. It turns out you can't force stupid people to stop being stupid. You can only let them live with the consequences of their stupidity until they stop being stupid.
In those states that have gone fully stupid, the people should be "altering or abolishing" their own state governments. If CA thinks that TX is going to send their boys to fight a rebellion in their own state, they have another thing coming.
If you look back at the Civil War, you had entire states rebelling against the government, who were ready to run their own militaries. We don't have that this time. The only likely scenario is a fight between the rural areas of the US vs. the government (as the urban areas are not armed or ready for a fight), and given what happened in Afghanistan, that fight will last for as long as it takes for the city folk to get hungry.
If we do go to a shooting war, we won't be the one's shooting. We'll just be knocking over bridges, cutting power and communication lines, messing up water supplies. And we won't be wearing uniforms or acting in any sort of coordinated way either, so they can't lop off the head or even identify who is doing what.
How? They wouldn't be able to collect tariffs as it is explicitly forbidden in the constitution for anyone but the federal government to do so.
States can collect property tax, sales tax, whatever, but taxing people's LABOR is slavery.
