If you look back at the Civil War, you had entire states rebelling against the government, who were ready to run their own militaries. We don't have that this time. The only likely scenario is a fight between the rural areas of the US vs. the government (as the urban areas are not armed or ready for a fight), and given what happened in Afghanistan, that fight will last for as long as it takes for the city folk to get hungry.

If we do go to a shooting war, we won't be the one's shooting. We'll just be knocking over bridges, cutting power and communication lines, messing up water supplies. And we won't be wearing uniforms or acting in any sort of coordinated way either, so they can't lop off the head or even identify who is doing what.

A large number of the military are no more than mercenaries. China, in sending the military to suppress the events at Tiananmen Square, sent in troops from distant regions because local troops wouldn't fire if ordered. The US military can do the same.

Fun little fact: A large portion of the US is already in open rebellion. What do you think the whole marijuana issue is about? 10th Amendment is a big deal.

No, I haven't served, I'm just a student of history. It is not rare or uncommon for men who are paid to shoot people to shoot their own countrymen.
