Either mindless fucking plots that they hold your hand through, laugh tracks or obvious cues for when to laugh, or social commentary. I’ve gone back to rewatching The (original) X-Files. It holds up remarkably well for 25 years old.
Give Star Trek Discovery a chance? I was very put off by one of the main characters and by the chief engineer, but they did some very unexpected things that won me over. I've actually come to love Paul Stamets as a character, he's great.
