It is also part of the “PPE” = Personal Protection Equipment

That patient may see one doctor... and that doctor may see a dozen sick patients. The PPE is to protect himself #1.... protect patients #2

That's true. You need a mask with a respirator to protect yourself. You are supposed to wear a surgical mask if you are coughing to help stop the spread of germs.

He is right about wearing the mask in surgery to protect the patient but it will also protect the wearer from airborne droplets. I suppose the surgeon thinks a barrier to germs works only one way.
