It's not really a coincidence. The biggest reason to go to reddit was to discuss articles and links that have very strict comment regimes or are a pain to sign up to each time.
People went to reddit to get away from for example being oppressed under the editorial standard of the guardian if wishing to discuss the article.
What has happened is that reddit has basically been compromised and is being held now to a strict editorial standard for all of its users.
It will eventually decline because that's not what a huge number of its users go there for.
I don't comment on reddit instead of vox because I'm in love with vox's moderation or selective picks of only the comments they like nor being at the mercy of their liberal heavy brainwashed audience.
