The only study so far had less than 50 people in it, so take this with a grain of salt, but I think around 20% of people taking only chloroquine had recovered by the time that 100% of people taking both drugs had recovered.
From what I understand the azithromycin is used to reduce opportunistic bacterial infections while the virus is taxing the immune system. It's possible that other antibiotics like streptomycin or tetracycline will work just as well as long as there aren't any contraindications
