They do it because of the crazy regulations this country has. If cruise lines were to sail under a US flag, there would be almost no cruise line industry. It would simply be too expensive for the average family to go on a cruise.
In fact, almost no international shipping is done under the U.S. flag, yet we protect it all with a navy that's 10 times bigger than the next largest navy.
You want to see America get back into the shipping and cruise line industries? Start repealing some of the insane regulations we have that adversely effect those industries.
This right here, man. I worked at a huge shipping company. Getting and maintaining a US flag is damned near impossible. It's called the Jones Act.
That company is a very old, publicly traded US company and a household name in the industry. And we had to strongly consider getting out of the US entirely, because the margins (negative, btw) didn't justify the flagging requirements.
Damn this is some retarded legislation all right. I can see one way where it is beneficial in that it forces trade to be done by US vessels with US crews, but that could equally be accomplished by offering tax reductions to companies that operate and crew American.
