China may be asshow but I still really hope this one is fake news.

how_could 46 points ago +47 / -1

It's probably true but its no more of a concern for developed nations since their health and environmental situations are tragically bad. All their old are dying because the air is already poisoned in addition to world class high levels of cigarette smoking. Industrial age China is a hellscape on Earth and if they weren't putting huge sums of cash into the pockets of the media and global governance they would probably be the target of a World War campaign.

This. China was the perfect trifecta of a shitstorm for it to spread, also of course because they were caught off guard first.

RichyCunningHAAM 34 points ago +35 / -1

There have been massive winds and fires ripping through China this month. Downed towers could explain. Also I’m sure the government can shut down users to keep them from getting and giving information.

23
dukeofdoorcounty 23 points ago +24 / -1

Agreed. Anyone who used WeChat to talk about the virus had their phones disconnected

9
chim_richels 9 points ago +9 / -0

We used WeChat with our team in China throughout. They were sending images, sharing articles and video clips. Literally nothing happened. They're all still.on the platform.

14
Eric-CIA-ramella [S] 14 points ago +16 / -2

I don't think it's as simple as storms blowing over towers. China has crazy weather all the time, Hong Kong was a big event they were actively censcoring everyone on their internet.

None of those prior events ever made a dip as massive as the one you see up above.

DisgustedByMisleadia 19 points ago +20 / -1

I don't believe any of the numbers coming out of China.

They want the world to think they have stopped the epidemic, so borders will be opened to them again.

Information leaking out of Wuhan during Xi's visit said they were kicking anyone that could walk out of the hospitals so they could say their active COVID-19 cases had dropped to a small amount. If that's true, then they are about to have another explosion of infections.

I don't think even a country like China could hide 8.1 million deaths in a 3 month span.

When your incinerators run at 200% capacity, intranet is shut off, and more importantly, people are welded / chained shut into their homes to die, cover ups larger than Chernobyl are absolutely possible.

10
Lion_Party 10 points ago +11 / -1

hold on a second OP. Can I get some sauce for the people being shut into their homes like that? I know China sucks, but that's aggressive, even for them.

If any of this is true, it's why we need to always fight for #2. Weld a bullet into the commie brainstem.

While I'm not sure I buy into the panic or cover up, I did see an interesting comment on Hacker News the other day. I wish I kept a link to it.

There was a thread discussing worst case scenarios about this virus, panic, etc., and someone claiming to be privy to insider research suggested that a substantial amount of this data wasn't being made publicly available specifically to avoid panic. He hinted that it might not ever be released.

The plus side (?) is that he claimed the data he had access to didn't support either the best or worst case scenarios but rather "the truth is somewhere in between."

there are a slew of videos of them welding people into their homes to prevent them from breaking quarantine. Just google it

See comments below, these vids have been in Wuhan comps in YouTube since at least mid February

I bet we see tons of boost mobile and nextel accounts drop in the next few months if people don't get back out there in a few weeks max.

You cannot let a good crisis go to waste.

China is using this virus as an excuse to round up dissidents and people that Post online comments that hurt the ccp's feelings.

China has a history of executing people for extremely trivial reasons. In college I remember reading an article about how they executed a guy for insulting mangoes.....

Could be the commies shut down towers/communication in certain areas to stop news spread?

Tend to agree, most are people prioritizing their finances.

11
27Sandino 11 points ago +11 / -0

It's quite the leap to conclude these people all died from CV even if we know China is asshoe. People talk. If anything, why not suggest this is an attempt to silence 8 million people, not cover up their deaths.

I will say that I'm friends with an older Chinese immigrant lady. She's pretty much fresh off the boat, it took me a long while to be able to understand her broken English and I'm pretty good at it.

Anyway, she quarantined herself at her husband's request in early February! Far before I even heard of the notion. They were in direct contact with their Chinese relatives and they knew it was worse than reported. People talk.

I thought she was nuts, but a month later the world is in lockdown.

8
Eric-CIA-ramella [S] 8 points ago +9 / -1

If you had been on /pol/ you would've been as aware as your neighbor in Feb

11
faxandu 11 points ago +11 / -0

In China they don't have contracts like we do. They pay monthly and have been staying home during this time period. Likely they are just using QQ or WeChat to communicate instead. I talk to about 500 different Chinese people every week and if anyone was dying on this level I would have heard about it.

1
Texas-Centipede 1 point ago +1 / -0

The contacts I have in China are saying that manufacturing was shut down Feb and March, but have started to turn back on and production will be back to full capacity in April.

7
JudicialDredd 7 points ago +7 / -0

So she's saying 8 million people have died? That doesn't seem accurate at all.

9
Eric-CIA-ramella [S] 9 points ago +11 / -2

Accurate to what? One percent mortality rate of only 1 billion people is 10 million. Do you also believe Chinese numbers?

3
Kosecant 3 points ago +4 / -1

It wouldn't be china's 1 billion it would be, likely, just from the Hubei province. that would make the death rate significantly higher.

From the article using Google Translate: "Although many people think of the new crown pneumonia epidemic, some analysts say that the reason is related to the "number porting network" which was implemented last year, that is, the channel can be freely changed without changing the number."

I say it's fake. I mean, 8.116 million is a lot and I mean a lot of people to disappear in a such a short span.

2
letrain 2 points ago +2 / -0

It's possible many are protesting the giant surveillance state. South Korea is already using phones to track people, infected people, etc. And they are trying to push that here as proof you got the vaccine or already recovered from the virus. And making it a requirement to leave your house.

2
Mark0alag0 2 points ago +2 / -0

Um, the words “Chinese report” makes this tweet rayciss. That is the key take away here, regardless of whether that number of dead is true or not....the 8 million is not what we need to think about here.....what is most concerning is that the tweet contains horrible racist verbiage.

2
2020magavision 2 points ago +2 / -0

SARS-CoV-2 probably has pretty similar fatality rates to the first SARS.

But, how popular has Xi been within his party for getting bitch slapped around by Trump? Or how many factions within China were siding with Hong Kong? Or the collapsed banking and real estate sector?

I wonder if a lot of the missing customers were because Xi went on a political killing purge to stay in power and used the "virus" as an excellent cover story.

This seems unlikely. Interesting data, but 8.1 million deaths? Even China's "great firewall" is too perforated with business communication lines to the West. Nothing that big would stay quiet. I loves me a good conspiracy but this one seems a bit much.
