Illinois' governor is now ordering a Shelter in Place in the wake of similar mandates by the governors of CA and NY. What is the main result of this order? In Chicago and throughout the state's urban areas at this moment there is a sudden uptick in panic and frenzy at stores. People incorrectly believe that the stores will close, that roads will be closed off, and that they will be forced to stay in their homes. Instead you simply will not be able to go to the movies, barbershop, concert, car dealership, and other "nonessential" things. What can you still do? Go on a walk, go to the grocery or hardware store, take a drive, visit your friends or family. Right now there is an even heightened risk of injury or death in Illinois, and it's caused by panicked drivers blowing stop signs and assholes who might shank you for TP at the local store. The gov already banned bars and dine in restaurants, why not just expand it to theaters, convention centers, malls, etc? Why not temporarily halt evictions and cutting off of electric and internet service? Because that wouldn't be dramatic enough. It wouldn't harm the economy and state of mind enough. It would not hurt our President enough.

Shelter in place is bs. Its authoritarianism.

Social distancing yes. Shelter in place should be reserved for active shooter situations, terror attacks, dirty bombs, etc. Some of DEM are taking it to the extreme.

Exactly. A terror attack, for example, requires extreme government responses in moments. This requires extreme action over time which is what all leaders should be doing. The shelter in place is basically saying, "the government is now take a much larger share of your personal responsibility for weeks or months or who knows how long".

Closed down a concert? Ok, I wasn't going to crowded places anyways. But now the governor told me that he's taking greater charge of my responsibilities, next thing maybe he'll say I should turn in my firearms.

How quickly a crisis/reality changes people's minds when it effects them directly and personally

Has nothing to do with what I will or won't do outside. It's about the gov using the appropriate actions. Me going out for a run or a piss is not going to spread the virus or make me catch it. Even Dr Fauci said it's not aerosol. I can understand them closing non-essential businesses just like it makes sense for the government to close roads during a snowstorm only for emergency vehicles because otherwise the roads will be clogged.

"Californians are not allowed to leave home except for essential purposes." it's enforceable with a misdemeanor of up to $1000 fine or 90 days in jail. So who's talking shit!

Edit: 90 days in jail

Requiring nonessential public gatherings is good. I'm cool with closing bars, nightclubs, etc. Making a vague declaration to open the doors to taking away people's rights is bad.

That’s like the governer of PA...stop hoarding toilet paper har har harrrr everything is fine. Then he shuts down the whole state with zero warning. I don’t support the hoarding but gee no wonder people are doing it. You never know what’s coming next.

MN gov is taking it day by day and today he didn't enact a shelter order but I bet he does. Once one liberal hellhole state does something the rest seem to follow suit.
