Ngl, I laugh whenever I hear this, because knowing several languages myself and knowing plenty of people who list all their languages on their CVs, (I’m talking Harvard, Cambridge, Oxford-educated Ivy league faculty here), “polyglot” usually means “I speak my native language and barely several others that are almost mutually intelligible.”
I love Melania and Trump, but Serbian and Croatian are essentially the same language (look into it; in addition to Bosnian, they all essentially changed a few words on purpose and then said “fuck you Catholics/Muslims/Orthodox, we don’t speak the same language!”). Slovene is VERY closely related to those three.
French, German and English are all commonly taught in European schools, and German and Italian in particular have a history in Slovenia due to proximity to larger, more powerful neighbors Austria and Italy, with plenty of native German and Italian speakers and people of those heritages. Remember, her surname is a slavicization of “Knauss”. I believe she may have lived in France for a while - and either way, it would have been useful working in the fashion industry.
So I’m not trying to take anything away from her, but rather to shed a little light on the topic. This is common in other parts of the world. You have to learn English and one other language in school. Maybe your grandparents have a different origin (this is a part of the world where people speak a different language over every mountain range, often) and therefore you grew up hearing and responding in elementary German. Maybe you took French in middle school and forgot most of it. Maybe you have a Croatian friend and he taught you the 10 words that are different in his language versus yours (lol).
As to whether she can currently speak all of those languages fluently, I sincerely doubt it. That said, I’m sure she could understand most of what’s being said in all of those languages and hold at least a rudimentary conversation. Impressive nonetheless, but not quite as much as most of us think. A little time studying and some reliance on “international words” (I.e. Photo, Auto, tele, choco, etc) and memorizing basic greetings and common response phrases most people of above average intelligence could speak and understand several languages I a. Few months
