Isn't that a Z-pack? Seems to me doctors always give those when they really just want to nuke bugs.

He/she may have switched due to the rise of amoxycillin-resistant bacteria.

Doctors are usually tuned in to what's going around at any given time, and what is working and what's not. Mine has specifically told me that he's prescribing a particular antibiotic because of this.

When I was a kid they gave out amoxicillin for every sniffle.

Amoxicillin is also a common prophylactic, meaning you take it before a medical procedure because you have a preexisting condition.

I've been taking some type of penicillin when I get a chest cold or cough. It works wonders and im usually good by day 2.

Yes. Azithromycin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic.
