Zithromax (brand name) is the only thing that can knock out my painful inner ear infections and it does it in record time. In this case it's probably not acting on C19 itself but on opportunistic bacterial infections that arise when you're busy fighting the coronavirus.
Azithromycin had been found to be active against Zika and Ebola viruses in in vitro (i.e. test tube) studies. But as you speculated, it also works in preventing respiratory tract infections in people with a viral infection.
