Is there no such thing as a citizen's arrest in the UK?

Yep there is. You also have the "right to use disproportionate force" to defend yourself, your family and people going about their otherwise "lawful business".

However, the police have a vendetta against Tommy Robinson. If you or I had done this – we'd have walked away.

Someone, let's say, "Asian", tried to steal my wife's phone – I reacted as any male with a testosterone level above >0.01 would and the police said I was within my rights to act as I did, even though I was technically protecting "property" (the phone) which isn't protected under the "disproportionate force" guideline.

We have massive systemic police problems in the UK, but your average copper who is acting of his own accord will see sense 90% of the time.
