Would you risk the life of 1 member of your family when you are a family of 5? The goal is crossing a strong river when you have only 4 emergency ropes, on the other side is plentiful woods and pastures.
What if the alternative is you all stay locked in a room forever, and you can no longer go out for farming. So you subsist on potatoes grown in the basement and hope it has all nutritional content.
If you choose the 2nd option you will be so starved they cannot attempt the 1st option.
I see what you're saying but this situation isn't as simple as that, there are a lot more options than just two and those options change on a day to day basis. If it was up to me I would be that 1 family member to stay behind, but I guarantee you that all 5 of us would exhaust all our resources and ideas before leaving someone behind.
If need be 3 of us would group up and carry that 1 across the river.
You give up to easily and default to an ideology that essentially takes the easy way out by cutting who you deem nonessential or not worth saving without exhausting every other means. If you are sincere in your way of thinking, and you do become sick with covid19, don't visit the hospital and don't get a test. Decide to be that "1 family member" in your scenario and let doctors divert their resources to other individuals.
You're right, I don't plan on wasting resources or even acquiring any for this coronavirus.
I think you've just forgotten how unforgiving life is. We're immigrants aren't we? Look up the survival rate for riding a disease laden ship several months across the ocean to settle new land and survive native attacks and disease.
We're here because our ancestors made brutal decisions for the majority to survive and thrive.
Why does cannibalism occur? Because friends and family are secretly wishing for the opportunity to eat each other? No.
We're coming to a situation where thousands of people may die to lack of insulin, or any number of other commonplace improvements to care.
All because people are terrified they'll get the sniffles while a small number die.
If I live in a town, maybe I'll chop off my arm to save your life. If we're stranded on a mountain impasse, chopping off my arm will kill me and only temporarily save you. I think you're misinterpreting someone who is looking out for a tribe as only looking out for themselves.
Different times. We don't live in the stone age anymore and with every year we have increased knowledge and resources to save more lives than before. There's no reason to default to the very best people could do in the past, we can do better thus have the responsibility to do better.
Having a feral viewpoint of this situation will only result in needless death and a weakened society. Saying that we should resort to more brutish tactics is taking the easy way out and an excuse to not think intensely about how you can save as many people as possible.
If your whole mantra is about making sacrifices, stay home. Don't be another vessel for this virus to infect anyone else. It's easy to talk big on the internet but when it comes down to it I doubt the majority of people here would be willing to give even their arm to save another person's life.
Take it this way.
