Guadalcanal the Marine Corps landed with M1903 bolt action rifles. The Corps had not yet adopted the M1 Garand.

After initial landings the US Army landed troops armed with the M1 and the Devil Dogs saw the new weapon and wanted them!

Joint maneuvers an old salty Marine posted up behind a fresh faced shave tail Army Lt. who questioned him why he was firmly affixed to his six.

Marine said "You'll probably get yours in the first burst Mac and when you do I'm throwing this damn Springfield away and grabbing your M1. "
