Democrats are so dumb. So susceptible to the media. It doesn’t matter what the GOP does. They can cut taxes for 80% of Americans and raise them for rich elites in high tax states (see TCJA), and bitch all day that the GOP only cares about the rich. All day long 24/7 it’s “GOP hates poor people” “Orange man bad”

I had a heated argument with my Bernie bro friend over this. He went ON AND ON AND ON about how it doesn’t help poor people. I had to repeat the same points over and over and over, but to no effect. You know what, I’ll just copy and paste my last text message on the subjec so you can read it.

“So I'm reading actual text of the Senate GOP bill and here are some facts.

1.) This bill has so much assistance for student loan holders. Most notably, it is PAUSING all payments due for 3 months, AND stopping interest accrual. So much for not helping students or recent graduates. And these months where loans are not paid continue to contribute to loan forgiveness. Seriously, there is so much here on student loans you ought to consider reading it. This portion of the bill is also subject to time extension if the crisis continues for longer than 3 months.

2.) This bill CAPS EXECUTIVE COMPENSATION to less than half a million for the next TWO years for any company receiving bailout assistance. You might claim that's a high cap, but the importance of this provision cannot be understated. Most of an executive's compensation comes in the form of stock. Bonuses are (usually, but varies via specific corporation) dependent on stock value at the end of the year. This annual total compensation is in the millions for billion dollar company CEOs. This VIRTUALLY ERASES the incentive to buy back stock, as it WILL NOT increase their annual compensation.

3.) I am not a lawyer, but the bill is a bit unclear as to what the tax year cut off is. It may be the case that 2019 returns are applicable. There is a provision indicating the Secretary may substitute 2018 for 2019. I'm not sure what that means

4.) Eligibility for the credit requires a MINIMUM income of $2500 for the entire year of 2018. AND this includes social security income. A taxpayer will get $600 if he made exactly $2500 in 2018. And, if said taxpayer is now unemployed in 2020 due to corona, said taxpayer gets unemployment benefits. It is NOT TRUE that low income earners get no stimulus or help. They get very much in fact. It's also not true that minimum income has to be $30k to be eligible for the $600 minimum. Only $2500.

5.) The credit is capped at a maximum amount of $1200 and begins to DECREASE in value at incomes above $75k until reaching 0. So the 1% get no money.

6.) Each child in the taxpayers family increases the value of the credit by $500 with no cap. So this bill disproportionately benefits families and single parents with children. You know, the people in America with the highest expenses.

7.) It looks like the bailout money is in the form of 0 interest loans. However, there are provisions for partial or full loan forgiveness. One condition of which is that the company may not lay off workers during this crisis. It gets complicated here, there is way too much text here and it is uncertain whether companies like airlines will be responsible for full, partial, or no repayment of the loans. Same thing with small businesses.

These are the FACTS, straight from the bill itself. Their is so much fake news out there.”

Standard reply "IF this is true, It's all good...." followed by not believing it's true.

That's how they mentally get around accepting Trump did something they approve of.

12
Swolehas 12 points ago +12 / -0

His argument was essentially that it's not "enough". Bernie is out there calling for $2k checks to every American, so I suppose that's why. They also don't seem to understand that without businesses there are no jobs, so to them business stimulus is just stealing from the poor to give to the rich

19
Bigger_igloo 19 points ago +19 / -0

Like crowder says. If they only care about rich people, and they need people to vote for them, then it's in their interest that the majority of people be rich.

8
Barbs 8 points ago +8 / -0

The tax year cutoff is probably arbitrary between 2018 and 2019, since 2019 income taxes are (or were) due on April 15, and the Feds won’t have those yet for most people.

1
Swolehas 1 point ago +1 / -0

I hope so. I filed a 2019 return on 30k gross income, but only a few hundred dollars for 2018 (I was a student, then an unpaid intern. Would be nice if I got something. I was supposed to be starting up a business right now, so that's not happening at least for the time being

1
MaxLevel0 1 point ago +1 / -0

Same situation here. While the 2.5K floor ideally has no issues, the truth is that a lot of people will fall through those cracks. A lot of people who don't receive any government assistance.

I've been a part of the gig economy for the last couple of years, and make more than the $500 minimum from any source so rarely that it never gets reported. I'm below the $2500 minimum for both 2018 and 2019 and have never taken a penny of food stamps or any other welfare. But since things went bad, the first people you stop hiring are the contractors and the gig workers.

No new money for about a month now. Would be nice to not be cut out of the bill that is supposed to help all Americans.

The first headline is by the actual reporter who is shocked at what happened.

the second headline is by the department editor, who understands what happened but wants to cover up for the Democrats.

the third headline is where editor-in-chief Dean Baquet, who championed the nonsensical 1619 project, comes in to curry favor with pelosi and friends so that he can get his lifetime of dinner parties and consulting contracts.

Please, everyone make sure that the children in your life are informed of our history and their own ancestors.

My niece was very upset about having the wrong color skin because of these lesson plans. She is a direct descendant from the KY Baptists. No, her teachers didn't bother to talk about who that was or what they did, or which US Presidents came from them, or why that one group shouldn't have any slavery guilt regardless. All that mattered was that my niece was white so somehow bad.

This is a real thing now. Be prepared.

19
Cantshadowbanthemall 19 points ago +20 / -1

Left first I presume?

My concern is that if they are bringing out Keynesian econ stimuli that means they think the virus is going to be sticking around. 3 weeks / 52 of slower productivity is not much, 10% dip and thus doesn't need a huge response. 3 months on the other hand....

24
Gramps80 24 points ago +24 / -0

And if Trump supports the stimulus, that means spending $2 trillion is the least bad trade-off in this. That's shot up red flags for me. I'm worried if shit stays closed for more than a month or so we'll be rebuilding the economy after this, like after a war, not just bailing it out. Lots of small businesses don't profit much. If you run a business, you can pay yourself a salary, you can pay for your employees... that's a successful business by all means. And those margins are where most locally-owned businesses operate.

deleted 20 points ago +20 / -0
10
Gramps80 10 points ago +10 / -0

Yep. Stay vigilant and buy local in these times if you have the money to... it's gonna be a rough ride for our entrepreneurs. Small business loans are part of the package, but with states one by one getting on-board with stay-at-home orders, I'd be pretty hesitant to take one out for a while.

16
Gramps80 16 points ago +16 / -0

Assholes had the WHO saying “no evidence of human transmission”..: Trump smelled bunk in the water early but China had already done the damage. People travel to China from all over the world.

The cynic in me is thinking this was engineered to cause a second Great Depression wherein China becomes the biggest economic power on Earth with the West recovering and in shambles. Regardless if that happens or not, I want to see some swift action taken against those Commie fucks once this is over. All manufacturing back in USA or with very close allies. Clinton and Obama were FOOLS or downright evil for sending our production over there.

It’s difficult to know what the true danger is with the media shills overhyping everything, but if Trump is considering a near $2T stimulus, that at least tells me this fallout isn’t something to take lightly.

The mainstream media is just an extension of the Democrat party. They either produce cover or provide aid for the party. Remember the wiki leak list of the 65 journalists from all the different news organizations meeting incognito with Hillary’s advisers so that they could all work closely with her election campaign? These people are not journalists, they’re just faithful party members doing their part to advance the left’s agenda. It’s been this way for a long time but yet another benefit of the Trump presidency has been to expose these people in such a way that even those who haven’t been paying attention can now see it.

Quick question. I work for Delta. We have been doing stock buybacks now for a while, we have been irritated about it, but the ceo and friends were hoping to do well and make the stock investment grade.

I wonder if the government, if it does bailout airlines, does it require all CEOs to resign and could the bailout come in the form of stock purchase by the government so that when we are back to full speed the government is paid back in stock?

Thoughts?

4
Razeontherock 4 points ago +5 / -1

I think you're asking if the government bought and held stock that the only repayment necessary would be the government selling its shares?.

That's a unique angle. Something tells me there's legal restrictions preventing the government from holding equity, but I don't actually know.

5

Guys, god knows I'm a (foreign) Trump supporter but coming from a financial/banking background and having seen how governments and central banks have destroyed the economy over and over again, I would never support any stimulus whether backed by government debt or by money printing (except tax cuts). These things backfire in many different ways (inflation, centralization of power, credit risk, creation of unsustainable bubbles, ..).

The big problem currently is the over hyping of covid19 and therefore over reaction. I think Trump has managed it incredibly well but the media and big corpo have made a circus out of this flu. Look at the numbers: people that die are almost exclusively 60+ years old with preexisting conditions. In Italy, out of the thousand of deaths, 7 were less than 50, and the average death age is 79.5 (median is 80.5) for a coutry where life expenctancy is around 83. Victims most of the time have other chronic diseases, such as asthma. Most forecasts assume an exponential growth of the virus and make it sound extroardinarily dangerous when it actually looks more like a better potent seasonal flu. Read Prof Raoult documents about it to assess how hyped this thing has been at this surprisingly coincidental timing.

Trump is managing it greatly but please do not support crazy packages even if they help the people you like.

somercet 2 points ago +2 / -0
