Trump didn't retaliate against Iran taking down a drone because he values innocent lives. He's not going to nuke anybody. Calm down.
You have a very short-sighted view of things. He didn't retaliate against Iran because even though he would have been justified, the enemies of this country would have blown it up into the worst thing since the Holocaust. In the context of going to war and all that shit, the loss of a drone over international waters, but close enough to Iranian waters to cause people who don't want to believe Trump to doubt, is simply not strong enough of a justification for Trump to risk everything. At that point he would have been throwing away the economy he built and potentially his re-election. We don't need to attack Iran, especially to avenge a drone. They are already getting fucked by us. Attacking them further would only play into the hands of the hard-liners. That's why he didn't attack. If they had done something more overt, it would have been different.

The problem was the Soviet invasion. That tied up their forces in Manchuria and Korea that they were planning to use in the defense of Japan and they had no ability to stop two invasions at once. And they certainly didn't want to surrender to the dirty commies (everyone knew that), so they quickly surrendered to us.
So that means that even in our regular old conventional mode... we will still absolutely fucking obliterate you and your families and your cities and we won't feel even a little bad about it.
