Oh good! Now our grandkids will pay for the great overreaction of 2020 for generations to come!

Achtually! If we tax the wealthiest 99% (excluding undocumented transsexuals, underserved at risk and of color Muslims and Salvadoran felons of course) at 99%, we will be able to pay off the debt quite rapidly. Maybe you should consider watching CNN more often drumpftard!

If we just quarantined the federal government for 5 years, we could save $25 trillion and pay it all off.

Pretty much. With a fiat currency and fractional reserve banking, "paying it back" becomes a mathematical impossibility. It was always designed to be that way, it's a ponzi scheme. As long as it doesn't inflate too quickly at one time, the rest of the world still shows "confidence" by using the dollar as the world reserve currency.

As long as we innovate and advance the rest of the world along with us, in some form, people put up with the bullshit. The second we turn full Idiocracy and only consume, globally the world will decide to drop the dollar as the world reserve currency and let us flounder. This is way oversimplified but the gist of it.

2
DrVSGGEOTUSPhD 2 points ago +2 / -0

Then what happens? Can we just inflate our currency to insane levels, pay our debts off with the worthless currency, and then revalue the currency or use a different denomination?

1
DickTick 1 point ago +2 / -1

No. We drop the bullshit all together and go back to gold standard. I fully expect that to be one of Trump's main goals after re-election. he won't stop until the feds proverbial head is on a proverbial stake.

Fun fact: 15% home mortgage interest rates suck no matter whether 17 trillion dollars is a lot or a little money.

Another fun fact: home mortgages were 15% in the 1980s.

A third fun fact: fed borrowing $2T overnight will reduce liquidity in the credit market and bring all your variable rate and new fixed rate loans up. Yay!

There are now commercials telling people to stay home and not many people are batting an eye.

The Social Distancing thing is fucking creepy as fuck. It's insane how it not only wormed its way into the public consciousness, but at at the speed it did.

You know something is fucked when the people who are unironically calling Trump Literally Hitler, are now practically begging for a form of Martial Law and they're okay with the police enforcing it.

41
SirSeizureSalad 41 points ago +42 / -1

You nailed it, these people are full-blown Stockholm syndrome on cuckbook. I saw 20+ people in a thread saying stuff like, "I pray they don't release the quarantine for at least 4-5 months" and "3 weeks isn't long enough, we need almost a year to make sure we're all safe".

What the fuck is wrong with these idiots. And of course, the other 100 comments were about Trump causing it.

25

6
Barbs 6 points ago +28 / -22

In a year, when everyone understands the true scope of what we just dodged, President Trump will go down in history as the best President ever. This wasn’t the seasonal flu, or even H1N1, this was a 100-year pandemic that in the past has wiped out tens of millions of people globally.

To get an idea of the virility, the average mortality rate of COVID19 is around 3%, whereas the Spanish Flu was 2.5% even with 1918 medicine. It’s one potent little bugger, which is why it’s kinda hilarious that generic malaria meds knock it out within a few hours.

Yep, definitely designed in China.

Good point, but Japan has some of the best healthcare in the world and it was not overloaded at the time. On the other hand, bureaucracy was blamed for making the situation worse.

12
DJTrump_MD 12 points ago +12 / -0

Bullshit. We are only testing people with the worst symptoms so of course the mortality rate looks worse. But in a couple of months the real numbers will come out and we’ll find out COVID-19 is just the flu (lite). That is, it doesn’t even affect children.

Feel free to message me in a couple months telling me I was wrong. But otherwise I’m gonna drop a preemptive “I told you so”

12
Block_Helen 12 points ago +12 / -0

Bullshit. You are buying into the fearmongering propaganda.

3
SordidPontification 3 points ago +9 / -6

Yep, definitely designed in China.

Eh. There's no evidence to support this claim and ample evidence to suggest that this was yet-another-in-a-string-of-coronaviruses that have hit China since 2003 (!). Three major outbreaks, countless minor outbreaks--and all this predating the lab people point to that came online in 2017.

That said, after keeping a close eye on the statistics and being fairly confident that this wasn't as bad as posters like u/Barbs have continued to claim, the increasing number of people under the ages of 40-45 who require invasive interventions just to stay alive has gotten me concerned enough to believe that not everything the worrywarts here have said is untrue.

Whilst I still believe the R0 rate isn't as high as claimed and believe it's probably on par with the 1918 or 2009 H1N1 strains, this is problematic for the reason that this would infer there are fewer asymptomatic cases that people keep pointing to that don't seem to materialize (or don't stay asymptomatic, since current research suggests 95% of these cases eventually turn symptomatic in 5-10 days). Thus, the lethality rate is much higher than I've been speculating and therefore closer to the real figures.

But, fortunately, it looks like none of this matters. If the FDA doesn't suddenly decide to say the hydroxychloroquine/azithromycin combination "doesn't work because lol we want people to die," we'll be OK. I'm almost certain of it.

I would like to apologize to the posters I've labeled concern trolls. While I still don't completely agree with all of your collective conclusions, I have changed my mind upon seeing further evidence that supports at least some of your claims. This has changed my opinion on this virus as something that is the worst pandemic since 1918.

8
Techrev 8 points ago +8 / -0

Maybe the difference is experience, and understanding and being able to easily spot propaganda when we see it. Most of the population doesn't notice these things, but some people just see through it without any problems. When you are 100% certain that a group is lying about something, but you don't fully know the degree, it's easier to drill down to the truth.

Numbers are nice, but statistics are one of the easiest things in the world for propagandists to fudge.

2
SordidPontification 2 points ago +2 / -0

Numbers are nice, but statistics are one of the easiest things in the world for propagandists to fudge.

I'll concede this point, because one of the most egregious misapplications of statistics I've seen lately was the hospitalization-by-age-group breakdown released by the CDC. While it looked rather disconcerting for younger populations, the age groups were broken down according to 0-19, 20-44, 45-54, 55-64, 65-74, etc., with the 20-44 age group being overrepresented in hospitalizations.

See the problem?

I think the point I was making is that as data is coming out about this, it has me somewhat more concerned that this isn't just a mild disease. While it's mild for a majority of the population (>80%), it's the 20% figure that's concerning, and it would be nice to know why this affects some people severely but not others.

I've been posting a significant number of comments suggesting there's no reason to panic and this isn't as bad as some of the people around here have been suggesting (barbs, fastmandan, et al). You can validate this with some effort.

However, I don't cement my opinion into a single position. Certainly not as more information becomes available, which is why I disagree with the official metrics that this has an R0 of anywhere between 2-6 and is most likely closer to 1.4-1.6. Otherwise South Korea's positive results would be through the roof!

2
Techrev 2 points ago +2 / -0

It's a lung thing, I think. Also, people panic when they have trouble breathing, and panic attacks can cause more trouble breathing. So, I think the complications there can explain some of that. I have one friend in Seattle who got 'really sick', and said he almost went to the hospital a week ago - from not being able to breathe. I get the impression that it's not a fun thing to get, if it gets ahold of you. It sounds a bit worse feeling than a flu? Still, people will survive it, and come out the other side.

29
ClownTamer 29 points ago +29 / -0

I’m willing to bet he strong arms the Asshoe CCP in some fashion to relieve a portion of our debt to them. This is all also going to make it way more likely he’ll get support in bringing things back from China, and putting more sanctions and tariffs on them.

They can give us the money in debt relief, directly, through tariffs, or some combination of them all. If the whole world’s pissed at them, there’s not much they can do to save face here. They lost from the moment they bit the bat.

13
Hawkman 13 points ago +13 / -0

That would make me happy considering our debt to them is at least half of what we’re about to spend, so more than a fair chunk.

11
Barbs 11 points ago +14 / -3

This stimulus is $6 trillion in total, and I think a significant portion is allocated to relocate vital supply lines to within the United States. The President wants us dependent on no one for our survival, and I don’t blame him.

There is still a lot of uncertainty in the market. We may have put in the lowest low of this pull back but we haven’t put in the bottom yet. The market needs to hear something definitive. This stimulus package is absolutely going to be bought up but it’s going to get faded too. Until we get back to work and companies can start issuing guidance on earnings, we’ll be chopping around where we’re at now. There’s still time to get in, even if it’s just a nibble.

Nice! I’m actually doing something on VXX. I had. VXX puts that I dumped at open yesterday and bought back into end of day after it climbed back up and the premiums were at a more appealing price again. I’m hoping for them to give decent returns, I’m just debating how long to hold with the jobs report looming.

3
Hawkman 3 points ago +3 / -0

Yeah, I agree with you. We haven’t put in the bottom yet, VIX trended higher today after gaping down at open, things are still shaky. We need the employment numbers to be at expectations or below this week and we need to get back to work ASAP.

1
The_Him 1 point ago +1 / -0

Employment numbers are announced at 8:30 tomorrow morning. The expectation is that they’re priced in and everyone is expecting a big number but I think when that number actually gets posted it’s gonna be shocking to see in black and white. I think we’ll pull in more tomorrow and Friday. Getting back to work is the biggest piece of stabilizing the market.

2
Hawkman 2 points ago +2 / -0

It’s definitely priced in but I still expect movement, that movement depends on how it compares to expectations but I think you are right about the shock factor. And I agree, we won’t see VIX fall significantly until everything’s opening up, which I hope is asap/easter.

1
The_Him 1 point ago +1 / -0

Well, that was a wildly unexpected day. I thought for sure we’d rally in the AM today and fade to a complete rollover during lunch and into close. That didn’t happen. lol

5
Hawkman 5 points ago +5 / -0

Futures started to move up a bit now. I’m not expecting anything even close to what we had today though. Hopefully market reaction to employment later this week doesn’t pull us back too much, but I’m still trying to stay optimistic and hope to see VIX fall back down some tomorrow with this passing.

Ballot harvesting?

All I care about is there ballot harvesting in the bill?

67
monochromedout 67 points ago +67 / -0

I'm REALLY hoping they held out against the crazy voting B.S. also, Schumer said it funded community health centers. If this is money to abortion centers I will be ballistic.

I pray we didn't cave on the ideological stuff.

9
DeplorableCentipede 9 points ago +9 / -0

Pardon the ignorance, but what is this “voting stuff”?

12
GreatNW 12 points ago +12 / -0

Same day registration, "ballot harvesting", maybe some other fuckin BS too?

I'm also concerned about the DACA clause.

4
deleted 4 points ago +4 / -0
3
DeplorableCentipede 3 points ago +3 / -0

Doesn’t registration and ballot harvesting happen through state law? I was under the impression that the federal government doesn’t have the authority to regulate voting laws.

1
GreatNW 1 point ago +1 / -0

Also my impression but limits on federal power have never stopped the authoritarians in the past.

27
bigtimepie 27 points ago +31 / -4

Bipartisan = republicans caved.

Hopefully it has enough good in it to actually help those who are hurting the most though... Time will tell.

28
monochromedout 28 points ago +28 / -0

Yeah, I mean we definitely gave stuff up. Hopefully it was more unemployment compensation and more money to state governments. I can live with that stuff. I can't live with stuff not directly related to fighting coronavirus, money to American CITIZENS or propping up sectors of the economy.

11
UpTrump 11 points ago +11 / -0

Hate to break it to you but it's definitely abortion funding

64

36

Did they pass that sneaky ass DACA clause?!

28
dandylionsummer 28 points ago +28 / -0

The most important question.

10
PraiseBeToScience 10 points ago +10 / -0

All that shit was in the House's bill.

Pretty sure they passed the Senate one as-written.

3

I hope to goodness it's a clean bill, not chock full of garbage.

I and others have been saying it for weeks now, but in 3-6 months we’ll all be saying this is the biggest and most expensive overreaction the history of mankind has ever seen. We’ve successfully played ourselves into multigenerational debt and a forever changed way of life. Congratulations us.

23
ParkingLotRanger 23 points ago +23 / -0

We let ourselves be sold into debt in 1913, and it’s been a long slide downward ever since then, but mention that and people’s eyes glaze over.

Yeah... 99% certain this was the senate bill they passed. The evil shit Democrats wanted was in the house bill.

If they had passed the house bill it would have to go to the senate next. Since it's not doing that, it appears they passed the senate bill, hopefully as-written.

2
Shivore 2 points ago +2 / -0

If this was the senate bill, why does it suddenly cost an extra $500 billion? They changed something.

32
Tripin 32 points ago +33 / -1

As long as the money is put to use for fighting not only the Coronavirus but other viruses as well and putting us on a path moving forward to deal with the inevitable biological warefare/terrorism in the future I'm okay with it. If they sneaked in garbage like funding for Sanctuary Cities and giving illegals a pass, I'm going to be pissed.

21
Ez_mac 21 points ago +27 / -6

Basically this means two things: 1) No one gives a shit about our national debt and 2) anytime shit hits the fan the government will be there to bailout the billion dollar companies.

15
OhLollyLollyPop 15 points ago +16 / -1

The airlines have cancelled tens of thousands of flights. The ones still scheduled are flying with almost no passengers. They pay for the planes, the fuel in storage tanks, their employees, buildings, airport gates. It's likely some will have to merge to stay financially viable. The country can't get back to normal without airlines. That's just one example of big business that has been harmed.

ALL business needs help right now.

Mexicola1976 6 points ago +8 / -2

So you want the billionaire dollar corporations to fail? That's a little short-sighted. But fuck billionaires and the rich, amirite?

4
bigtimepie 4 points ago +5 / -1

Yep, this has been long established, unfortunately. At least this time a fraction of a percent of it goes directly to regular people...... progress??? I don't even know any more.

4
Hawkman 4 points ago +5 / -1

Fed ready to hit the print button every time now.

4
krzyzowiec 4 points ago +4 / -0

The national debt doesn’t matter unless you believe it is actually debt that will be paid. It’s not. The debt will always grow and never shrink because that is how the financial system sustains itself.

As long as we have a debt-based money, this will be true.

Letting these companies fail would not be good. They are struggling because the economy is shutdown. It’s not the same as failing from bad business decisions.

I’d rather the government not be involved at all, but if you use fiat currency then intervention is inevitable, and this is actually a good reason to intervene for once.

The little that I have been able to find so far sounds like GEOTUS and Cocaine Mitch made the Dems drop their demands completely (or the negative publicity did).

Spez: did some more reading and it sounds like she bent the knee....I still want to see it in writing though

I am going to have to get me one of those Treasury-Thingys. When I need more money, I'll just print off as much as I need with my "Home Basement Treasury Kit". Then I don't ever have to worry about that stupid budgeting, or that troublesome running out of money situation, or that hard math to figure out how much money I have left to spend.
