As a former owner of domesticated pet rats (known as "fancy rats") I feel it necessary to point out that the rats got hosed over big time by the plague. The rats were VICTIMS of the fleas infesting their fur and torturing them. It was the FLEAS that actually carried the Yersinia pestis bacterium. Blame the nasty disgusting fleas! They're so smug, with their largest penises in relation to body size in the entire animal kingdom.
And it was the HUMANS' fault for living like filthy, disgusting, vile pigs, dumping their feces out the window into the streets while everyone died around them.
Rats were caught in the middle and got a bad rap! They're smart, friendly, fastidiously clean little creatures that make great pets (the ones bred to be tame). Yes, wild rats are still vermin that breed like rats, kill at will, I'm not off my rocker here LOL
I never noticed that, so it must not be much. They also sometimes leave little brown pellets in their wake and die after only three years of life. No pet is perfect, though a lot of disagreement on that point is to be found I'm sure :)

The rats got hosed over more than you know. Models of the spread pattern of the plague don't line up with migration and breeding patterns of the rats coming from Africa, but they do line up with migration and breeding patterns of gerbils.
The rats and mice were just interim carriers, it was likely the gerbils who brought the plague to the ships in the first place.

The problem with even tame pet rats is that they leave a urine trail everywhere they go. Can't breed genetic built in gps out of them.
