Trump had something to do with it being built too, he talked about it in The Art of the Deal.
Their proposed convention center site — between Eleventh and Twelfth avenues from 34th to 39th streets — was later promoted by Donald Trump, who had obtained an option on the rail yard from the bankrupt Penn Central in 1975. The City and State eventually chose the rail yard site. Although Trump's offer to build the Convention Center was rejected, he was paid a broker's commission by Penn Central.
I wondered why the DNC picked that place (I had never heard of it before the week of The Election, and didn't even know it was in New York until just now.) I just assumed they wanted it because of all the glass: because of her "glass ceiling" narrative the media-driven DNC intended to show off their corny cellophane confetti-cannon whim. (WEW LAD I'm glad we didn't have to witness that shitshow/poo-program!)
But this makes more sense now. Not only were they deliberately holding the event in Trump's hometown as a typically Leftist childish taunt, they also chose a facility that Our President had a hand in getting started during its planning stage.
Trump worked on the early stages of that project (moar on that and elsewhere in this thread) so he was getting the facility started-up before she ever heard of it!

They chose instead to launch a boondoggle of tens of millions in budget overruns, finally opening the center years behind schedule in 1986. This was of course 30 years before the September 11, 2016 9/11 memorial service when Crooked Hillary Clinton was chucked into a van like a slab of beef just 10 minutes from this venue.
