Universality, affordability, and quality. Pick 2. Italy probably has one of the best publicly funded systems, but not the worlds best. The worlds best routinely swap between France and Germany, and guess what, they're not actually universal single payer. They have a very baseline for the poorest, but everyone has private insurance and pay out of pocket for small services. Also, the means to deliver health care are privately supported. But my fellow Canadians are so fucking retarded they think we're doing great when we are barely testing at a rate of other countries and I bet we'll be getting this drug many months from now and our markets will rebound slower and worse than the USA, which happens every recession. We're a mediocre country.

Came here to say this. I wonder if they helped them at all or just slammed the door in their face. It’s a shame when you can’t take care of the elders who have done so much for the world.

"Free" medical care can either be high quality, or highly available, but not both.

Italy chose high quality/low availability.

Impossible to judge mortality rate with an unknown total number of cases. Current mortality rates are based on only cases with positive tests. Their National Institute of Health also came out recently and said only roughly 12% of their death total could be directly attributed to Covid19. So no, they are no where near close to a 10% mortality rate.

I've also read that they are literally calling every death with a positive case of COVID19 death by COVID19. Guy could have a heart attack, DOA to the hospital, test positive for COVID19 and it will be documented as a COVID19 death.

Seems that way.

Man, it'd sure be nice to have a real media with real professional journalists looking for real answers.

Instead we get commie faggots that want to burn down the whole planet because "orange man bad reeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEE"

I read that something like only 12% of the deaths they’re giving as virus deaths are directly caused by the virus

Even with their inflated numbers, it has still only killed about 1/3 as much as the regular flu.

They average 21,000 flu deaths per year despite being 1/5th the population of the US.

They were also flying in Chinese workers by the tens of thousands. Most of them were infected no doubt.

Sources cited by worldometers site. Interesting data. Lombardia is the epicenter. 10x more cases there than anywhere else.

Only 10 million live in Lombardia region, 1/6 of Italy's population.

Spain is showing a 7.2% case mortality rate too, so Italy's numbers and Spain's numbers are in the same ballpark.

What's the age distribution of the deaths in Italy?

You can't answer that question. Nobody's reporting it.

Isn't that the most important question?

If, say, 99% of the Italians who died from this are over 80, doesn't that change everything?

Something is seriously wrong with these numbers. Either they’re mis-reporting it, or they’re running up the numbers by not treating people.

In addition to the aforementioned older age group and poor treatment, the other factor is the lack of COVID testing. There are probably many people (young, healthy) that got it and recovered but not hitting the stats. These numbers are probably only the worse cases.

If you are over 60, they won't admit you to the hospital there. They are triaging cases. A fair amount might be regular flu.

Italy is ranked 5th in median age(perhaps not anymore); it is a retirement destination. They have a higher percentage of high risk individuals than most countries.

Italy’s rate of death is fairly consistent at around 1O.5% annually (from memory). Given the number of people who succumbed to this with secondary conditions, and their age, it’s quite possible that they would have passed this year from something anyway. Harsh though this sounds. It’s not until we have and annual statistic that we really have context. It’s probably fair to say that they all passed in a short timeframe because infection, but this could mean lower rates of death in general for the rest of the year. This number doesn't really mean much right now. Quite simply we don’t know. We do know that they managed this very poorly and were horribly under-resourced. This whole thing is a dogs breakfast.

Edit: The annual data comparison would need to be Jan to Dec this year vs Jan to Dec in prior years in order to get apples with apples statistics. Not year ended 3Oth of June which happens in some instances.

Maybe they shouldn’t use socialized healthcare...

Part of the issue is how concentrated the disease is in the northern part of the country.

The hospitals are overwhelmed. Because of this patients cannot be supported.

This will level off soon given the distancing they are now practicing. But it has been a substantial loss of life.

New Orleans did the same (Mardi Gras) and they have an exponential explosion of cases now.
