Italy’s rate of death is fairly consistent at around 1O.5% annually (from memory). Given the number of people who succumbed to this with secondary conditions, and their age, it’s quite possible that they would have passed this year from something anyway. Harsh though this sounds. It’s not until we have and annual statistic that we really have context. It’s probably fair to say that they all passed in a short timeframe because infection, but this could mean lower rates of death in general for the rest of the year. This number doesn't really mean much right now. Quite simply we don’t know. We do know that they managed this very poorly and were horribly under-resourced. This whole thing is a dogs breakfast.
Edit: The annual data comparison would need to be Jan to Dec this year vs Jan to Dec in prior years in order to get apples with apples statistics. Not year ended 3Oth of June which happens in some instances.
