She is very healthy but pushing 70. She got back from a princess cruise that was cut short bc of the chinese commie virus 4 days ago. The day after getting home she fainted 2 times. Her symptoms right now are stuffy nose, no ability to smell, trouble sleeping, and difficulty breathing. Based on those symptoms she went to dr to get tested for it and bc the cruise ship had 4 individuals who they allegedly knew had chinese commie virus but let everyone go home to their respective countries anyways. Her dr didn’t mention anything about the malaria medication for treatment. I asked her to bring it up to her dr ASAP to see what they say. This is in ca.

My wife’s cousin is being treated with the generic version of the malaria drug and Azithromycin and his fever has been gone for a day or so now, after nine days of being sick, so good call on having her ask about that. In fact you call and communicate that to her drs if you have to

I believe the idea is the chloroquine malaria drug makes it more difficult for the virus to replicate, and the antibiotic fights the pneumonia component.
The antibiotic actually has anti-inflammatory properties which is why it’s used for viral illnesses.

I had the virus last week. The #1 problem from it is a hacking dry cough. Have her get swabbed, or at very least go onto a web consultation with a local doctor. My 77 year old dad uses the hydroxy-whatever for his arthritis treatments!

While you wait certainly consider easy and cheap vitamins like Vitamin C, Vitamin D and Zinc. All of which benefit the immune system. Additionally, you may have her start drinking tonic water. Although not nearly the dose she needs, the Quinine in it is the original malaria drug. Even a little is better than none while you wait. I suppose even a little will help with absorbing the zinc, which I believe is the main reason it's effective as I understand it.

Many elderly are very deficient in vitamin D and it plays a significant role in immune response. I concur with supplementation.

Why is it a celebrity like Colton Underwood and Daniel Dae Kim, two healthy younger males, can get that prescription combination (HCQ and Z pak) but not your 70 year old mother? Everyone should be getting this prescription.
She is very apolitical so no news and no knowledge of the malaria medication. I just told her about it last night so no chance yet to ask her doc.
I hope she is doing okay and can recover quickly.

My mom was sick for 4 days a week or two ago after being in DC/VA: totally drained, dry cough, fever. Doc wouldn't test her for covid because so few cases in our area at the time. Tested her for flu which came back negative.
Shes fine now, but still has a diminished sense of smell (almost entirely gone). We don't know if it's from the flu test (physical damage to nerves) or an indicator she had covid. She's in her mid 60s.
The inability to smell is crazy. I got a nose swab bc of flu symptoms 2 weeks ago and it never messed with my ability to smell nor did having a pretty severe flu. I really hope it’s not severe for her. I’m glad your mom is better.
