There were other things they put up with on a regular basis that we don’t. Think about the alien and sedition acts, or the fact that the states were perfectly well allowed to have established state religions, etc.
I got no problem with state religions. I almost included "complete removal of Christianity from public education" on my initial list but that's a testy subject nowadays.
