Why are businesses firing or laying off employees so soon? I know they have cash obligations to creditors and other bills to pay. But shouldn't they just be furloughing their employees for now? Essentially they're flushing their businesses down the drain. How can you re-open for business when you've shit-canned your most important resource?
Yep, its totally unrealistic to suggest that every business has to have some padding that lets the survive total shut down for 1 month and keep all people on the payroll. That's simply insane.
No work. My dad is retired but works part time driving rental cars from point A to point B. Seventy drivers laid off Monday. No cars to drive. He said that the usual pencil pushers are so slow that the few cars they have to deliver are being delivered by them.
I work in the restaurant equipment repair business. Nobody is calling to get their stuff fixed. I have been doing this for a long time and so far our small shop has been able to keep us busy. Other shops are laying off and cutting hours.
For some businesses this is a perfect excuse to fold entirely / partly (IE some less than profitable departments) Or to move operations overseas. Unfortunately some people have no sense of timing. Half of my building is furloughed, and the super still had the gall to demand we deliver backpay for two months of cleaning services we never even received. So we made sure said super won’t get anything till our paychecks return.
Also sorry to hear of the weight you nd your wife have to bear during this time. Don't think that this silliness on my part is my only focus, it is more my release. We all have struggles we are facing, mine are making sure my children that are living in different parts of the state are taken care of (they are in the restaurant service industries), My 80 YO mother in a different state is safe, my father in law that is in a nursing home that we cant visit, my friends that are heavily impacted .. things are very real already but I try to maintain a healthy dose of optimism
