Bear with me, please. This is not as off topic as it will first appear.

I found some orphaned baby mice, and attempted to save them. It is an extremely difficult task, and is rarely met with success -- they must be nursed every two hours for the first two weeks, stimulated with a warm q-tip to make them eliminate after each feeding, kept warm warm and dry; a monumental task. IF you succeed, however, you will have the most devoted little friends you've ever known!

Seeking advice, I searched dedicated animal rescue forums, where I found plenty of information. On one, however, was a jerk bitching at how stupid everyone was, trying to save these "worthless" babies; "survival of the fittest!" was his stated operating philosophy. He was not well received, as one might imagine and to say the least.

On another forum, a woman posted a video, where she discussed and demonstrated how to feed and care for orphaned baby rats. At the end, she said something that was the perfect response to the Darwinist Jerk: "People always ask me why I am trying so hard to save these little baby 'vermin'. I simply tell them, because the world is a better place when we are kind to each other!"

Like that cab driver and the elderly woman -- he made the world a better place for her as she was leaving it, and his kindness has touched others, in more ways than he'll ever know.

I couldn't save the baby mice. Maybe next time. I could use their friendship.
