It isn't passed between humans, but anything contaminated with rat urine or feces can pass it. Here in the US it's a cute little mouse, at least not a rat as they have there, which is worrisome: just how many rodents can carry this? You can imagine how many there are in China, even if they are eaten when possible, and how bad sanitation could spread it.
