Unless you are sick and can't afford to be locked in your home just because you have a cold. But you are right, most people wearing masks in public are just wasting masks.
Seems to me that the main way you can become infected is through your mouth and nose, it's probably possible through your eyes, but it's not going to absorb through your skin. So a mask is probably actually the best thing to use, not only will it protect you from people coughing in your face but more importantly it will stop you from touching your mouth and nose; they're not recommending them for the public because they want them prioritized for healthcare workers and there aren't enough for everyone.
That being said, I have a whole box of N95 masks that I haven't even touched except to put one on my dog for a Facebook picture. Maybe I'll start worrying about this bullshit if someone I know gets it, or even a friend of a friend.
