It puts me in mind of the generation of the 2nd Great Awakening -- people born from 1790-1820. Pious, religious, and gullible enough to believe that no Euro immigrant could possibly be ungracious enough corrupt the system that had brought freedom and prosperity to Americans and had banished tyranny of Church and state. These were our ancestors from New York and Massachusetts, Harvard and Yale. They who survived the Civil War may have lived to see the Democratic Machine take over Boston and boast, "The Protestants are finished." The deceived went on to develop the American West. The Machine went on to consolidate power in America's major cities and ultimately become the dominant American political culture, all based on conquest, deceit, and an utter disdain for the American way of life.
