Back in the late 1970s, I would buy and read National Lampoon magazine. I remember them running (upon Reagan's first election) a fake news article about angry Canadians enraged that yet again Americans were promising to "move to Canada " if a candidate to whom they objected were elected President, only to not follow through. The article quoted a Canadian man as saying [from memory as best I can recall] , "We installed multiple McDonalds and Kmarts so they would feel at home, and they still didn't show ! " So apparently this was a trope as far back as the 1970s, which must mean that threat/promise was longstanding by then.

I grew up with liberal parents. I love them, but they've been saying shit like this my entire life.
