The Mardi Gras Indians named themselves after native Indians to pay them respect for their assistance in escaping the tyranny of slavery. It was often local Indians who accepted slaves into their society when they made a break for freedom. They have never forgotten this support.

In theory many clubs have secret membership. I was able to do some work after Katrina, and was given honorary membership to Zulu (coconut included) in return. Pretty unusual for a Scots-Irish white guy.
I attended a Mardi Gras in 2002 and asmy group was walking back 5-6 miles back to our hotel room, after the trollies stopped, we passed by some building that was just finishing up the "Zulu Dance"
