Can anyone recommend a good firearm for a beginner? Something preferably very easy to clean and fun to shoot at a range. Also, it needs to be reasonably priced. A cousin of mine is at the age where I want to get him into the range 😁

I'm presuming he means indoor range. I don't know of any indoor ranges that allow shotgun shot, only slugs. Slugs in a shotgun is expensive and NOT for a beginner.

Many here, including myself had a pump shotgun as a first firearm. Many of us also belong to multiple gun forums and refuse to go to indoor ranges, for lots of reasons.
You can’t go wrong with a Smith and Wesson EZ 9mm or 380.
Both are reliable and very user friendly.
9mm has more recoil but is a much better defense caliber.
Ruger wrangler!!! Can't beat a .22 for range fun, ammo price, and learning good habits. This gun is cheap, super simple, easy to clean, and cowboy guns feel so good.
If he just wants to get used to shooting honestly a .22 rifle is pretty good. You can get snapped in on how it feels to shoot and operate safely without going blind on the cost ammo. Also if something goes wrong, it's going to do a lot less damage potentially than say a 30-06. Where I come from (upper midwest farm) .22 a lot of kids first weapon. Otherwise I would base it on what he wants to use it for. For home defense, pistols can be difficult to master for a lot of people especially if you don't shoot regularly. But they are a lot of fun at the range. A 12 gauge with 00 buckshot is easy to use, incredibly effective for home defense, and won't travel through every wall in your house when you shoot it. It's not much fun on the range though.

I would recommend going to a firing range that allows you to rent a pistol so you can try it out.
At first I really wanted to get a S&W Model 642, a little snub nose revolver, but after shooting it I realized it was really unenjoyable to shoot.
Ended up buying a Glock 19 like everyone else. Very reliable gun, a joy to shoot, and it's got a great reputation.
The smaller more compact and easier to conceal carry version would be the Glock 43.
I EDC a Glock 19. Best all around. The S&W EZs were pretty popular with new shooters in my area.

Highly recommend a pump shotgun. A quality piece is $350. Trap shooting is a blast (haha) - way more fun than stationary paper targets.
Also each 00 buck shell is the essentially nine 9mm bullets simultaneously. That's real stopping power.
From there, you can decide if your second is a pistol or AR.

100% agree. If you can afford it spend $250-300 on a .22, learn what you are doing then move up.
22 shells are cheap as chips, you can shoot hundreds and learn the mechanics without breaking the bank.
