I would recommend going to a firing range that allows you to rent a pistol so you can try it out.

At first I really wanted to get a S&W Model 642, a little snub nose revolver, but after shooting it I realized it was really unenjoyable to shoot.

Ended up buying a Glock 19 like everyone else. Very reliable gun, a joy to shoot, and it's got a great reputation.

The smaller more compact and easier to conceal carry version would be the Glock 43.

I EDC a Glock 19. Best all around. The S&W EZs were pretty popular with new shooters in my area.
