Yeah does seem off. But apples to apples - healthy adults age 20-60 with no underlying conditions should all fare the same. It’s when you bring in the underlying conditions (weakened immune system, etc) that is when it seems odd but that’s why we don’t get the full picture as it scares us more.
most people infected don't require hospitalization. just like any other illness, people with weak immune systems will suffer more. we don't have enough of an understanding of all the genes in our DNA to precisely pin down the genetic factors. it's completely possible for both of the scenarios you mentioned to be true. the seasonal flu is the same.
