Ethnic Chinese here (not China Chinese) -
When I was in Guangzhou (the richest city of the rich region) around 2012 they're still holding live cats and dogs and tons of wild animals I can't name in wet market, and them eating wild animals have 0% to do with poverty. I mean, poor quality frozen pork is probably way cheaper than most of those fresh meat.
It's mostly a cultural habit that's probably as difficult to eradicate as smoking, both of which makes no rational sense but which millions of people do. But we can certainly make eating game animals as unwelcomed as a smoker in conventional hall.

Maybe they should institute proper animal husbandry in their brainwashing cultural reeducation camps! /s
