This safe space/anti-free speech attitudes seem to be prevalent among the younger generations regardless of ideology. How has it come to the point where people are afraid to debate their ideas against others?

Traditional understanding of dialogue and diplomacy is based on a belief that there is an independent truth that both sides can agree on. Post-modernists don't believe in objectivity. We disagree on the fundamental utility of discussion, thus there can be no dialogue. Both sides know that this "culture war" is building toward an actual war, and not much can be done to avoid that. All that's left is to pick which side you want to be on when the proverbial spark ingnites this powder keg.
