Anybody else troubled by this? People are being kept home under government order, some states are even fining people for doing the wrong thing.

Not don't get me wrong, I think there is some seriousness to this situation and I am taking precautions for me and my family....but when did that include being ok with government officials telling people they can't see friends, family, go to work, etc.

What happened to the right of self determination?

wash your hands, don't touch your face, stay inside if you're sick.

that's where it should have ended.

OP you're completely right.

I wish that had been enough. Voluntary "social distancing" should have been enough, too.

But in my area, people are ignoring even stay-at-home orders, packing parks, shoulder-to-shoulder.

We probably still haven't seen the full effect of college students that spent their spring break on crowded beaches.

I like this country, and would like to keep it.

The only thing that will end it is people who don't exercise their freedom responsibly, and think it gives them license to do whatever they want, with no regard for anyone else. Those people include the left, and faux conservatives on the right.

Banks are deemed as essential businesses in California, yet 24 of my branches closed, including my closest branch I normally go to. I now how to drive 15 minutes across town at $3.59 per gallon (with no cars on the road now) to get to the bank that's open. No email notifications sent, nothing. It's getting beyond absurd.

This America expects you to act responsibly.

If you were willing to self-isolate afterward, then you might have a point. The problem is you can unknowingly spread it to a family member of someone who is vulnerable, and they take it home.

Because the disease is so contagious, it's not just the vulnerable that would have to isolate. It's the entire household. I'm dealing with that now, as I have extended family that is vulnerable. When I deliver groceries, I either clean the items or remove them from the packaging.

And since you would inevitably be exposed to a highly contagious disease that can be fatal, you would be quarantined by your county or state health authority, under existing laws that are already used for similar diseases like tuberculosis. Still don't want to comply? A court will order you to be confined.

And spare me the false equivalence with influenza. We have proven treatments for influenza and even tuberculosis. We have promising treatments for COVID-19, but we don't yet know if they always work in a wide spectrum of patients.

Freedom and responsibility go hand in hand. Anyone that thinks they can have the first without exercising the second is part of the problem.

I always find it interesting how anyone that counters an unfounded opinion is called "concern trolling". It's a catch-all accusation that translates to "I don't like what you said, but I can't refute it". Earlier this morning, I saw someone reporting factual information about their test for COVID-19 being called a shill and concern troll.

I won't bother to reply to you, because your reply makes my points for me, better than I ever could.

Have a nice day.

If “responsibility” means I have to do what you say or you take away my freedom, then I really never had any freedom.

DisgustedByMisleadia -4 points ago +1 / -5

You don't have to do what I say. I don't make the laws. But if you violate a law, you are likely to experience consequences.

If you don't like a law, then advocate changing it. Call your Congresscritter. Run for office. Find a lawyer that will take your money to challenge it.

Your concept of "freedom" is anarchy.

I think I see your problem: you think your only responsibility is what is required by law.

I was referring to freedom and voluntary responsibility, where you do the right thing, even when you don't have to.

That seems to be a difficult concept for many people.

Happened after 9/11 too. Elites who want complete control over the people passed all kinds of Orwellian shit and a lot of scared people went along with it. The globalists never let a crisis go to waste- panic the sheep and they'll submit to whatever authoritarian horseshit you come up with.

Coincidentally, the same people screeching that Trump is a "fascist" for over 3 years are now demanding martial law.

So far I’ve felt like a lone voice about this in my circles. Trying to warn people about government overreach, fake media stirring panic, herd immunity, Hydroxychloroquine, etc.

I will say this ... lately I find more and more people listening and reposting and repeating and generally thinking it all through. Keep cross posting on other social media and keep talking about the infection to death math and the treatments and such. People are starting to wake up.

Never thought I would see them arresting Pastors especially in a state like Florida

DisgustedByMisleadia -7 points ago +1 / -8

That pastor was flagrantly defying a public health order.

The church had livestream capabilities, but still had over 400 people in two different services, even providing transportation to the church.

The sheriff warned the church about doing so after the morning service, but they still held the evening service.

The most egregious of these will need to work their way through the courts to be blocked from happening again.

It's yet more proof that state governors have too much power.

The order in Broward County also said that it was unenforceable. (The state only strongly recommended that people over 65 stay home, but it's not enforced)

3
AT_Finn 3 points ago +3 / -0

I don't what to tell you, you just have to start suing. Republicans seem adverse to suing and using the court, but that is the route to go.

I agree. I wondered from reading and watching a few things that this virus scare could be used to chip away if not smash our constitutional rights in a fine powder under the guise of our "protection". It's completely messed up and could be abused even after the virus is purged. I don't like the precedent being set, and I bet this virus was released with that being one of the many goals.

I keep waiting for the hammer to drop, at what point is this tyranny? Sure keeping gun stores and manufacturing open during this seems like a signal to conservatives that this is not tyranny... but it still feels a lot like tyranny

Look at the laws and executive orders that enable the president and governors to do these things once they declare a state of emergency. That will give you the answers you are looking for. You can debate whether these laws are constitutional or not, and how you could go about filing a lawsuit over it- how would you get legal standing to bring it to trial, which court you would file it in, and so on. That would be a productive way to go about actually solving the problem.

IMO these are only temporary emergency measures - very much like a war. No rights are being taken away in any kind of permanent way.

That said, there are some potentially dangerous precedents being set that we all need to be vigilant about.
