It doesn't help against the virus. While your body is busy fighting off the virus, secondary bacterial infections sneak in while your immune system is busy. The hydroxychloroquine helps zinc kill the virus, the azithromycin helps kill the other stuff, like bacterial pneumonia, etc.

My understanding is zinc doesn't kill the virus, it just inhibits the virus's growth so the immune system doesn't get overwhelmed.

I heard that Dr. Raoult in France would like to include Zinc Sulfate as a supplement like Dr. Zelenko is doing in NY, but regulations and protocols prevent this.

Some antibiotics are soley useful for bacterial infections, but some have anti-viral properties as well.

I just saw a doctor this morning talk about antibiotics having some effects on virus’s that isn’t fully understood

The thought is it is to fight secondary bacterial infection that can take hold while the immune system is dealing with the virus. HCQ acts as a mechanism to allow zinc to get through the cellular walls of the virus which has been shown to radically decrease the ability of the virus to replicate allowing your immune system to deal with it.

Perhaps against the opportunistic infections that are bacterial. They can follow along when the person is weakened by the virus.

(NON-VALIDATED OPINING)

I can’t source this right now, but it might put someone else onto the correct research track:

I think that Covid-19 virus directly causes the pneumonia-like buildup of ‘gunk’ in the lungs (unlike regular flu, which only helps create opportunity for infection due to a patiet’s depressed immunoresponse)

But the built up ‘gunk’ presents a medium in which other bacterial infections can grow, and the Azithromycin kills those.

Hydroxycloroquin, as I understand it, has an effect of reducing viral infection loads, possibly by blocking cell surface receptors that act as a pathway for the virus to enter the cell.

THIS IS NOT MEDICAL ADVICE. DON’T INGEST FISH TANK CLEANER. COMPLY WITH ALL AUTHORITIES. THAT ABOUT COVER IT?

It can help with secondary infections, has some anti inflammatory effects in the lungs and seems to also have some anti-viral properties.

If you have a nail, but no hammer, you could use a crescent wrench; the wrench wasn’t made for nails but it is a hard metal object which is incidental to its main purpose.

You would probably categorically say that wrenches are ineffective for pounding nails and you would be generally correct

What I remember from continuing education: Azithromycin changes the PH of RNA interrupting virus replication.

Much more complicated than that, but that was the bullet point.

Flu can lead to pneumonia pretty easy I think, so maybe they're just throwing it in there to make sure?

Honestly, it doesn't matter HOW it works. What matters is THAT it works.

Scientists can spend the rest of the 2000's figuring out why this combination works, but right now we have lives to save!
