The Federal Department of Education is not an eternal pillar. It only dates from the Carter administration. The Founding Fathers did not devise it. Education was a state and local matter until only a few decades ago.
Teacher here. The way it is always justified is “things were not great but we are learning and getting better”. They said it with No Child Left Behind and now they are starting to say it about Common Core. The argument is ALWAYS that they need more time and money and ultimately more power.
When you have a massive system that spends so much but gets so little, that is a clear indication of resources being allocated poorly. Determining the most efficient way to allocate resources, aka economics, is the #1 thing that has to be fixed if we ever want our education system to thrive. However, you can never bring up the topic of money with these people because they just resort to emotional arguments about how our children’s education is priceless. It’s the elephant in the room that the unions and politicians won’t let you acknowledge.
