I'm not a prepper, but when I first heard about the Chinese virus in January I tried to get some extra N95 masks for my church as a precaution. ( We use them anyway working on the building.) I could not get N95's, at least not at any reasonable price. This was very early on. I did get some nuisance masks, which we were almost out of anyway, but they are really not applicable for virus protection.
I tried to get masks on Jan. 26 in Las Vegas and every Walgreens and CVS were sold out. The entire shelves were empty and everything beside where the masks were had full supplies.
So it sounds like China put the word out to their America operatives to commandeer the supply of materials they knew everyone was going to need. Sounds plausible.
