I sold a house I had in Joshia Tree to two professors of film, one USC and the other UCLA. It was a pristine original condition desert modern. I thought for sure in their field they would understand what they had. They totally wrecked the interior with a very bad remodel. It was the only one outside of Palm Springs. I don't think the professors are too bright either. The whole thing is a scam

That's sad. Like you said, you would have thought with that background that they would understand what they bought. Sucks when you have to sell something that the next person will either tear down or ruin.

It is a great comfort that I bought the place for $90k from someone who did not know what they had and sold it for $450k. I put about $100k into it and used it for years, plus rented it out as a vacation rental with the best manager ever taking care of it. Even with the bad remodel the position of the house and the views are incredible. In some ways I miss it and owning anything in CA is a pain. Now there are new regulations for vacation rentals that the new owners are having to deal with. The county wanted all the building permits and I told them I only ever did repairs, no permits needed. We rewired to bring it up to code and did similar upgrades without changing the original house. They are the ones who should have gotten permits because they gutted the kitchen and got rid of the original O'Keef and Merrit appliances still in perfect working condition. Literally gutted to the studs and redid everything.

Wow, you were smart. You were the ultimate responsible owner. Do you think they sold the appliances? In a normal market those could go for big money if they took the time. Probably lots of folks in the Palm Springs area have contacts in construction to look out for that stuff.
