Thank you for your service to our country, friend.

The overnight job I mentioned above was on an OCONUS military installation. Often I'd get calls from military wives while their husbands were on deployment, needing help with family services etc but the line was open to anyone, and most calls were from locals not living on-base.

I did it for a few years, took a break of about 2 years, then took a very similar position at a private 'shelter' for abused women and children. That position also involved night shifts, the hotline, and the addition of being the night 'counselor' to the women who were being protected there.

That position was difficult - crazy men beating on the door late at night when they'd discovered where the woman was, dealing with police reports, seeing the women and the looks in their childrens eyes. I only lasted 18 months, maybe 20, but less than 2 years. Then I took on secretarial work for a few years, got bored, worked in a chemical plant for several years as I saved up to go back to college, and switched to the medical field.

Lord, the jobs I've done over the years! lol I had fun tho - and have never stayed long at a job I didn't like. Never understood the old 'but there aren't any jobs!' since I've never had trouble finding one. May not be exactly what I wanted, but it was always interesting and I've always supported myself. I learned many skills and saw a lot I'd never have seen, otherwise. Life's been good to me.

My first husband was a Viet Nam Vet - USMC - and it messed him up. He was very young when he went, only 18, and wasn't at all prepared for what he'd see there. He was tough in a way, tho, and he taught me a LOT. Alcoholism got him, in the end.

I admire our Veterans and all our Active & Reserve troops for their service - We wouldn't have our freedom without all of you. It's a sin and a shame that we have homeless and broken Vets in this country. I donate books to our local Veteran's Home - one of my friends (& ex-supervisor) is an Asst Dir there. They're in good hands! She has trouble delegating lol, so I know she's all up in their personal care and treatment. Woman's a workhorse!
